GM banned from selling your driving data
The Verge reports that GM [is] banned from selling your driving data for five years:
The order comes after GM was caught selling customer data to third-party data brokers and insurance companies — without consent.
It is in the US (so it’s likely void here in Canada). The keyword here is consent. It is not that what they did is illegal, it is just that they needed to ask for consent, and this step was widely skipped as part of a “growth” strategy to sign up as many people as possible.
GM said in an unsigned statement that it was committed to customer privacy.
Riiiight. Then why do they collect the data if they care about privacy?
The whole investigation started long before the discovery of the Volkswagen leak.
