Dell kills the XPS brand

The Verge reports that Dell kills the XPS brand:

The PC manufacturer’s new laptops, desktops, and monitors will have a simplified naming scheme with labels like ‘Pro’ and ‘Max.’

The gist of it is that Dell want so badly to be like Apple1 that they will name their products with a “Max” and/or “Pro” moniker, making the whole thing confusing at best, on to of which adding “Base”, “Plus” or “Premium”. I can conceive the idea of simplifying the product line, but this is just confusing.

My XPS 13 (with Linux) was a very serviceable laptop, despite its AC adapter dying quickly, and before I could give money to Jeff Bezos to get a replacement battery, the experience of buying one from Dell was the worst I have ever had. And our monopolies here in Canada have set the bar low for customer service. So I can’t see I’m a big fan. The machine was replaced when its USB-C port started being unreliable for charging while the non expandable2 16GB of RAM became insufficient.

Now, this might explain the RTO mandates: drink the Kool-Aid added to the water coolers and other beverages, so this insanity is not questionned.

  1. Michael Dell infamously said in 1997 that if he was at the helm of Apple he’d “shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.” ↩︎
