Amazon Fire TV to add ads

When you buy a device, you own it, right?

Amazon doesn’t think so.

Cord Cutters News tells us that Amazon’s Fire TV is Adding Full-Screen Video Ads That Play When You Start Your Fire TV:

Today, Cord Cutters News has confirmed that Amazon is adding full-screen video ads that will play when you start your Fire TV unless you quickly perform an action on it.

This new update will be rolling out to all Fire TVs made in 2016 or newer.

I’m sure they’d love people that bought a 2016 device to already have replaced it. But no.

“Our focus is on delivering an immersive experience so customers can enjoy their favorite TV shows and movies, […]” Amazon said in a statement to Cord Cutters News.

Emphasis mine. Immersive experience to show ads? I don’t think any of their users asked for it. This is probably the biggest load of b.s. But you trust Amazon, don’t you? You should only hope the agreement doesn’t get altered any further. This is a clear encroaching on your device ownership.

I hope this brings a lot of FTC complaints (since they are based in the US and the FTC has more teeth than anything in Canada).
