BART's seat slashing scam
I’m kind of a transit nerd. Here is an article I stumbled upon that made me smile because in retrospect it’s a funny story.
SF Gate recounts (in 2019) The little-told story about the BART seat-slashing gang that was part of an upholstery racket:
Freshly arrested, the man decided to bargain using an interesting, unknown bit of information. He told police there was a racket being carried out on BART trains, involving paid-for vandalism of the transit system’s seats.
It was in the 1980s.
BART, Bay Area Rapid Transit is the mass transit system of Silicon Valley, sorta. If it really was, it would be modern and not try to run by buying spare parts on ebay (in 2016), or using rolling stock that exceeded its lifetime by 100%. The heart of high-tech in the US has one of the worst transit system for an urban area that dense. That why Uber and all the self crashing care comes from Silicon Valley. Or maybe its state is just symptomatic of Silicon Valley.
I missed taking it last time I was in San Francisco, mostly because it’s so inconvenient and I didn’t have the time.
